Home is more than four walls and roof. Home is a door opening to you, your family, your pets, your lifestyle, your neighborhood, your community, your city. It’s all encompassing on so many levels.

Seeing Red

The color red can be tantalizing, energetic, and inviting and shades of it in your home can prove to be a stand out choice…

Ah the color red, when I think of it in cinematic terms, the red room in Twin Peaks comes to mind and The Shining’s geometric rug. Not the most positive use of the color, but I did find Amelie’s bedroom dreamy as well as the grandeur of Downton Abbey’s grand room to the bewitching vibe I was looking for. It’s that time of year where I spotlight the color of the year trends, but unfortunately this years choice has left a bland taste in my mouth. Sorry Pantone but Peach Fuzz doesn’t do it for me. The remainder of 2024 color trends of the year are leaving me with lukewarm feels as I don’t tend to favor too many of the cool tones they’ve chosen this year. This is the year to feel emboldened!

I have always gravitated towards the color red and is the only pop of color I give leeway to in my wardrobe, however, I don’t see it enough in interiors. Reds can invoke warmth and energy in a living space not to mention what it can do when creating a lush bedroom dreamscape. In Asian cultures, red symbolizes good fortune and happiness, perfect in celebrating the Year of the Dragon. It also draws an audience to a focal point within a space. You want to be where it is.

I’m talking about deep warm reds for interiors, for example my staircase wall will be full of drama this year as I coat it with Benjamin Moore’s Flamenco. You have to be careful with reds which makes it all the more exciting to coat you with my dear. It’s a strong color, not for the weak. It says “LOOK. AT. ME.” with danger, desire, and mystery. You have to be confident to use such pigment, but once you yield to it, you won’t regret it.

Entryways

Red in an entryway says, “Greetings, come inside, let me show you more.” It' is a perfect lead in exuding confidence and interest.

Living/Sitting Rooms

I’m a fan of an “conversational” space and how I love thee Victorian aesthetic. I am destined to owned a velvet chaise lounge. Nothing says, “Spill the very juice tea” like a vermillion velvet loveseat. Now, I’m talking a lot of vintage here, but red has its place in the modern decor world as well. Artwork in particular comes to mind, thinking Rothko and Rauschenberg prints or red accent furniture. Red also pairs well with natural materials making it an ease to mix and match with. Finding Oriental rugs dominated by the color is a nice option to tie a room together. Pairing shades of oranges, yellows, and blues with the strength of red can create a relaxing atmosphere.

The Kitchen

Finding pops of ruby in a kitchen through appliances and cabinet backgrounds will bring any kitchen to life. Making tapas was never so vibrant!

The Bedroom

This is a “duh” color for this room. Since red stimulates conversation and invokes passion, it’s a desired choice. You may not want to go too deep with red walls, but you will still feel flushed by adding velvet curtains and linens for a dramatic effect, how Moulin Rouge of you!

Red courage

Working with reds in your home can be a hard choice. When we think of red, it gives us different connotations of meaning…alert, blood, sirens…vampires—it can be alarming or too kitschy in some instances, so choosing the right shade for you is important. Red can create a beautiful and lush space. We know that red is quite the popular color with exterior doors and why wouldn’t you want your home to stand out! Incidentally, red doors historically mean that your mortgage has been paid off, but I do believe today it’s more of an invitation than a brag. Don’t be afraid to use the shade, have fun with it, play with it, you won’t regret the results. Here are few more ideas to fire you up…

The Return of Velvet

The look, the feelt, the velvet! Create drama and luxury with velvet decor…

I have a thing for velvet. I find it to be a fabric of luxe and lush finishing and it’s popular again much to my pleasure. I like how velvet can create drama within a room. For instance, I just bought velvet curtains from Amazon and wowsa, what a difference it made in my otherwise plain living room. I think sometimes people take it for granted because they see it as a heavy fabric, but velvets come in all weights and shapes. I found these luscious finds that you could consider decorating with to bring any room to stun.

The Velvet Couch

You know the one that makes any Oscar Wilde prose delicious. I love the comfort of a velvet sectional, so plush and tranquil.

The Velvet Tuft Headboard

Bring luxury to your bedroom with gorgeous velvet headboards.

Velvet Decorative Pillows

These come in different shapes and sizes and create beautiful contrast amongst your furniture.

Velvet Vintage

You can never go wrong with a signature piece in velvet. Create drama with a velvet chaise in the bedroom or a antique velvet sofa for spilling the tea in the sitting room.

Velvet Dining Chairs

Bon Appetious! Dine in elegance with adding a little velvet to your dining area.

Velvet Drapes

What theatrics is this! Velvet curtains create gorgeous texture in any room. Get hideaway rods for a real dramatic effect.

Can't Delete? Hit Refresh.

When you can’t necessarily renovate, you can definitely take advantage of a good deep clean and some simple room refreshes.

I look around my house and I want to cry sometimes because we are in that stage where we plan to renovate, but can’t right now so things are just left in disarray. Every Spring, hell every 6 months I really enjoy a good cleaning and refresh of my home. That means dusting everything from floor boards to ceiling fans and moving furniture to new places. It really does change the energy.

So this season, I’ve decided to stop whining about it and start room by room with a true renewal. Get the gloves out, initiate the elbow grease, and start envisioning a refreshed living space. Check out these simple and affordable tips for reinvigorating your home.

Kitchen

Fridge

Reorganize and clean your fridge out. Take everything out, wipe down everything, throw out old food and condiments and start anew. Don’t forget to put your baking soda in there to eliminate odors. Throw out freezer burned items and save space by using storage containers and bags.

Pantry

Take everything out. Wipe down shelves and sweep and clean floor space. Contain. Label. Organize by function. Voila! Save space and make it pretty!

CABINETS, FLOORING, BACKSPLASHES

A perfect way to refresh is to add some new color to your kitchen with newly painted cabinets, update them with new hardware. Replace countertops or do a good wipe down of the old ones. Add some decor like flowers, candles, and new containers for oils and culinary essentials. Add an water resistant rug or add additional shelving.

Bedrooms

Bedrooms are easy to update and refreshen. Move beds and furniture (yes, you finally found that lost sock) and thoroughly vacuum or dust/mop underneath. Decorate some repurposed furniture with wallpaper or paint. Paint an accent wall. Wash draperies. Get rid of clutter and organize drawers. Add a new area rug. Change up or frame some artwork. Change the lamps or light fixtures to add a whole new mood. And easiest of all, buy new bed linens and pillows. Replace curtains or buy some unique curtain holdbacks.

Bed Cleaning Tip: Sprinkle baking soda after vacuuming your mattress and let sit for 15-30 minutes before replacing linens.

Offices

Offices can get a refresh by organizing files and clutter. Adding a nice shelf can help with organizing materials or adding some nice decor. Add a plant and get some calmness to your workspace. Clean desks and wipe down monitors good. Clean keyboards, they get real nasty after a while. Get some drawer organizers to help with your drawer clutter. Add some candles to create a tranquil aromatic work environment.

The Rest of the House?

Time to find that lost $20 from 2018. Move all the furniture and thoroughly vacuum or sweep/mop the room. Dust off all shelves, remove books, wipe down floor boards and mouldings, and ceiling fans. Dust picture frames as well. Smell the clean! Replace candles, drape blankets, vacuum inside furniture. Refresh an area rug or paint a wall. Add the ceiling fan you’ve always wanted or create a built-in look with shelves.

Closets: Remove clothing and clean inside. Organize and purge clothing and shoes. I know, I still have hope for those jeans from college. Color coordinate or function coordinate clothing. Invest in some good hangers that won’t have your clothes end up on the floor. Use clear boxes for shoe organization or add hooks for belts and bags. Use dryer sheets to keep clothes smelling fresh.

Just a simple deep clean of your home will refresh and revitalize. Trust me you’ll feel so much better and more energized. Create the space you want to live in. There are so many things you can do to add unique touches and make it feel like a completely new space.

** Cleaning Tip: sprinkle baking soda to all your rugs before vacuuming. Use vinegar to get rid of odors. Invest in good cleaning products!

Set the Table

Gather round! Dining rooms are great spaces for conversation and breaking bread…

Do you have a dining room and do you use it?

We have more of an eat in kitchen - no formal dining room. We have never needed one. What is supposed to be our dining room is an office.
— Lindy Z.
Yes we do. It looks very pretty holding my mail. We use it in cold weather when our family comes over for dinner. Not as often as I’d like.
— Lisa R.
All the time. (Until someone in my house took it over as her COVID-era work from home space!)
— Charles N.
Yes, to date, once every 3 years … rethinking to make more of a flex space.
— Keith R.
E: Yes and never
C: Oh you mean our craft palace catch all?
— Chris & Emily L.
We don’t have a dining room, but do have a dining table separated from the rest of the kitchen by an island. We eat there several times per week.
— Lora T.

In my research of friends, it seems the dining room does exist, but is rarely used for nothing more than a holiday or extended family gathering. I think a lot of my people have eat-in kitchens or a dining table which extends, and is near the kitchen. Formal dining rooms seem to be a bit dated for most people, but I personally love them. I prefer to keep stove and plate separated. I think it also depends on what mealtime means to me as a concept. Do families still eat together? Do people still invite friends over for dinners rather than just cookouts and potlucks?

Growing up, the dinner table meant eating all your vegetables, doing all your homework, and having “serious” talks. This was very different than the dinner table at my Uncle’s house which consisted of a cloud of smoke resting upon anywhere from 5-12 family members playing cards, drinking and laughing hysterically. A dinner table that was a peninsula for biscuits and boudin on a Sunday morning after church, a meetup of cousins for late night cereal encounters, and countless holiday gumbos, fried turkeys, collards, and jumbaylas. It is the place of fond memories and heritage that defined my childhood. I think a lot of people associate the dinner table with tradition, but what does this room mean for the modern family?

Our dining rooms have now become transitional due to the pandemic. Dining rooms became workspaces, homeschool desks, and craft work areas, giving way to home offices becoming one of the most sought after rooms in buying a home. It also forced families to be around each other all the time and without some sort of room division, I can only presume, a formal dining room with pocket or French doors—a makeshift escape.

I guess I’m calling for a dining room comeback! I enjoy entertaining and cooking for people and having a meal presented, but mostly I enjoy a room where I can actually practice the art of conversation while enjoying the intimacy of breaking bread with family and friends. You know, caring and sharing over fork and knife. Perhaps I’m just old fashioned, but I do love showing an older home that has a formal dining room. I agree with my lady, Home Stylist, Ginny Sawatzky— “I’ve seen many unused dining rooms and have lots of reimagined ideas for those spaces.”

Decorating a dining or eating area doesn’t have to be a utilitarian task, you can have a room that is fun, elegant, or artfully themed. Whether it’s playing around with wainscoting, adding coffered ceilings, or experimenting with paint colors or wallpaper, by all means—go fork and dine!

French inspired dining rooms could go one of two ways—the grand and detailed style fit for the Sun King himself, or opt for the simpler and cozier French countryside where the whisper of Lavender and the open air preside.

We’ll have a glam old time

I adore a glammed up room. I love the jewel tones and the lush textiles. Art deco decor mixed with that Hollywood feel makes for a great dining space with lots of dinner table good times.

@swoonworthyblog

for forks sake

Vintage Industrial is a fave of mine. Bold, but not cold, you can create a dining space that introduces a sexy elegance fit for sophisticated candlelit dinners or a dining room that will endure years of kidability and has that “restaurant” vibe.

Sometimes a darker Scandi look can be compared to the Modern Industrial look. I like my Nordic flare to have some attitude. Minimal, but not without statement, this style conjures transformative vibes and beautiful design.

Only In My Dreams

We all dream of cool features in our home. What are some desirables homebuyers are looking for these days?

Laundry/Utility Room with Dog Washing Station (Yes, Please)

We all have dreams. I’ve been dreaming of my dream house before Barbie had hers! When I show houses, I find it interesting what people find to be desirable features. There are times when the lack of these coveted components will make or break a sale. I once had a buyer who refused to look at any homes where the bedroom was near any of her children’s rooms and one client really wanted a dumbwaiter. I personally would love a home with a library, but hey, I’m still dreaming.

Everyone has different tastes, but trends in buying change either from demographic to demographic or what HGTV tells them it is. So I decided to do some research in finding what buyers find the most yearned for features in a home currently. I also asked my Facebook friends out of curiosity!

A Room for an Office
Thanks Covid! As most of us have jobs and bosses who realize working from home is just, if not more productive. This has become a very desired amenity.

Eco-Friendly
83% of Buyers Want ENERGY STAR-rated Windows. Climate change is finally becoming trendy! Seriously though, clients are starting to ask for these type of eco-friendly features. From solar panels to energy efficient lighting to garden areas, homes built for saving the planet will soon become permanent fixtures.

Hardwood Floors
This still ranks pretty high on the list. More than 80% of buyers want hardwoods and I have literally had clients run at the sight of carpet. If you are selling and there are hardwoods underneath, get ready to rip some carpet out.

Hidden Appliance Storage (I need this in my life) - Houzz

Granite, Quartz, and Marble
Buyers want these materials in their kitchen and prefer countertops that will last and not stain.

The Downstairs Main Bedroom Suite
I’m finding more buyer are looking for this desired trait and I’m finding newer homes that has implemented this or the downstairs full bath. Transitional home buying, people want to think of their forever homes as fitting their growing needs.

No Sweat! A Home Sauna - Realtor.com

Laundry
Everyone wants a laundry room or a dedicated area for laundry. Whether people want up or down, I’m not able to say for sure. I can tell you that I prefer up. I don’t want to have to carry loads of laundry upstairs!

Outdoor Living Spaces
This one can also be attributed to our friend Covid. People really want patios and wrap arounds to hang out on and having outdoor lighting to enhance the experience.

Open Floor Plans
People are still loving this. Being in all the places at once seems to continue to be a solid want for buyers.

More Storage Areas

Renovated Kitchens and Bathrooms
They want it! The two most sellable rooms in a house.

Storage in General
Walk-in closets, garages/sheds/workshops, pantries, and shelving are all winners. People want to be able to not see their stuff!

Pot fillers are becoming quite popular and double basin sinks are ranking up there as well. An honorable mention to powder rooms and built-ins. Sellers, if you plan on listing your home, keep these in mind as they can increase the value of your home.

Here’s what my FB Family said they wanted in the home:

Zero lawn. None. No weeding, no trimming, no mowing, nothing. Just a door I walk into that has my stuff inside it. Like the house in Gretel and Hansel. Or the one at the end of Contempt. - Nathan T.

It's So Easy Being Green

As we approach warmer weather and the promise of Spring, March ushers in all things green.

My Viridescent Life

Green represents all that is harmony in life, nurturing and growing. Creating tranquil or rich homescapes is easily done with this viridescent hue.

Envy. Life. Eggs. Acres. Money. Gables. Packers. Emeralds. Trees. These are just a few words that conjure in my mind when I think of the color green. When I see the color green I feel calm, refreshed, and growth. The reason restaurants use a lot of green is to promote not just healthiness, but psychologically it puts people at ease, making them want to hangout for a while. Green is the color of money and is so not only because the ink was plentiful and durable at the time, but also because green was associated with stability.

Green is balanced and creates harmony. In your home, it can be inviting and creates a tranquil environment. So as the shamrocks bloom, the leprechauns dance, and the green beer gets guzzled by wannabe Irishmen everywhere this month, enliven your home with adding some touches of the viridescent shade. You can create an inviting ambience by painting some walls with Laurel Leaf by Better Homes & Gardens or Sherwin-Williams color of the year, Evergreen Fog. Want a more moody feel, get yourself some rich velvet greens to enhance your bedroom or lounge area.

The color green denotes nature that can nurture your soul. Try adding some touches of green to your home design, refresh the bath with a rustic shade of Sage or enliven your kitchen by painting those dull cabinets with a nice Moss green and contrast it with some nice neutrals. You can quite literally add a touch of green by adding some real growth with a well placed tall plant in the corner. I love using green in my design work and this year I’ve been seeing a lot of it in home decor and fashion and I love the freshness it can bring to a home.
- Ginny Sawatzky, GS Design

I personally am a huge fan of Hunter Green or darker greens. I like the intenseness of it and coupled with gold or black can definitely create a come hither vibe. I’m no green thumb, I leave that up to my mother, but I can handle hung succulent terrariums (yes, I will kill those too) for some subtle biosphere feels. With as much suffocated quarantined life as we can muster, it’s time to exhale don’t you think? Green is the perfect way to renew and refresh and replenish. It’s springtime, aren’t you ready to add life back into your home? Here are few ideas to inspire you this very verdant month.

Harvesting the Porch Hang

As the weather gets crispier, our porches become less frequented, but here are a few tips to enjoy it even during the colder months.

I grew up in the deep southern suburban residences of Louisiana. As a child, I recall my walks home from school and to Miss Sweeney’s candy shop up the road. Every day there was a Mister or a Miss “So & So” on their front porch primed and ready for countless waves, ‘hey shas’, or an invite for iced tea or lemonade. That’s just how it is there. A home without a porch in the South is like Ted Lasso without a ‘stache or the Arctic without glaciers, it just doesn’t feel the same.

Wrap arounds and full frontal country porches are never overlooked on my personal home searches. It gives me an added bonus of being social without having to go out out. It allows me to say hello and chat with my neighbors in the fresh air. Lastly, let’s not forget how badly most of us want to shout our personal style and seasonal decor creations off the front stoop. All you Cottagecore people, kudos to you and the time it’s taking to get that perfect Farmhouse Fall look. I’m literally thinking on how much pumpkin and gourd sales have gone up in the last 10 years.

Although I spend a majority of my eves and morns on the front porch all year round, I have grown to love the Fall hang the best. I take this outdoor nook hangage seriously, and with lots of comfort, saying hello to passerby as the whiskey leaves my lips, knees pressed up to my chest, fuzzy blanket wrapped around me — ah, my favorite time of year has arrived.

There are some things that are required for this type of porch hang. Sure, mums and pumpkins all damn day long, but I’m talking about the other things. For instance, a good porch for hanging out on in the Fall is going to have good seating, warm lighting and a place to put your blankets. I suggest having some sort of table as well, because there needs to be some nosh. So, of course I gathered some ideas on how to make your porch more inviting.

Lighting

Lighting is everything especially in an outdoor setting. Give it a little mood swing into the season by adding your traditional string lights to railings and ceilings or give a touch of character with lighted birdcages or floor lanterns. Put some in your front trees for added effect or add a table lantern for those late night reads. Also, consider putting some soft lighting under your stairs that will make it easier for you and your guests to find their way home.

Seating

You can go traditional and have a nice chair set out there with the warm colors of fall (reds, oranges, yellows) or you can really get comfortable with a day bed swing adorned with warm knitted blankets and pillows or if you have a smaller porch, single swings and blanket draped rocking chairs are cozy. Adding an outdoor rug with large seating pillows can give you a loungey outdoor effect as well. Invest in some seat warmers! Just make sure it’s comfortable.

Added Touches

An old trunk is ideal for storing and protecting your blankets in addition to using it as a table. Add a ladder to place blankets on for a decorative look. A small fire pit or small heater will bring some nice warmth to your portico. Get some nice fall themed curtains to add some insulation and create a dramatic effect.

Don’t forget to make your favorite warm cocktails and beverages to complete your Fall/Winter porch hangs! Purchase a small bluetooth speaker or break out the acoustic to provide some great holiday or seasonal tunes to mix.

The significance of the porch in American culture runs deep:

It’s National Book Lover’s Month and what better way to celebrate than checking out these local authors…

Written by: Jo Ann L. Breaux

When I was a child, my parent’s had a beautiful hutch desk made for me and within a few weeks, I had my own set of Childcraft Encyclopedias along with a set of World Books. I sat at that desk for hours reading. I learned so much sitting at that desk and it lead to an early onset bookworm condition. My mom had to basically beg me to go outside.

I outgrew that desk, but I created a new home in my town’s library. I devoured books. Today, I’m still a voracious reader and my love for books has not subsided. It is National Book Lover’s month and what better way to celebrate than to show you some beautiful home libraries and reading nooks. Don’t forget to support your local bookstores and check out these local authors! (click for info)

I used to think anyone with a home library was bougie and there’d be a lot of dark wood and dusty old furniture in a grand room. Today, having a home library is on my home dreamscape wishlist. The thing about home libraries is that you can find them in the tiniest of spaces and a nook is a perfect reading spot. You can put one in a dormer space or a walk-in closet or you can fit one on that large landing you never know what to do with. The most important thing is finding a comfortable, tranquil spot to peruse all the written verbiage you can want and have access to all your favorites. Built-ins make the perfect setting for creating your book oasis and now you can find all kinds of unique ways to store your stories.

Arriba, Arriba!

Transforming your high rise balconies into a comfortable oasis can easily be done and is a nice DIY project for the summer!

unsplash-image-1vieZivk1As.jpg

One of the things I love about the architecture here in RVA is it’s balconies. I love a good balcony and there’s nothing like sipping coffee or having a glass of vino from it as you overlook your domain. Many of the Fan apartments I lived in during my residences in Richmond have come donning balconies. Many of them left significant memories of hangs with friends, late night romances, and a proper setting for reads and contemplations.

I used to put a chair out there and maybe some makeshift table to collect ashtrays, bottles, and accouterments fit for a college student. I haven’t had a balcony since my days on Avondale in Bellevue, the only thing I miss about that rental. The balcony now resides on my wish list of things I’d like when purchasing a home, especially one that my Queen’s Quarters leads to.

RVA is seeing a boost in its Condo living in the city and most of these units do come with their elevated lookouts. The balconies seen in our neighborhood’s Revival, Colonial and Edwardian styled homes tend to be an easier space to decorate just by sheer size. It would be equivalent to decorating your deck or patio, but our city dwellers have a smaller platform to work with. Not to worry, one can turn these into cozy lifted oases fit for Juliet herself. However, although our city dwellers have a smaller space to work with, there are many options for creating a unique and comfortable space to look down upon.

FLOORING

Flooring tiles and rugs can create beautiful textures and colors for your balcony flooring and can range from super affordable and interchangeable to super luxe and very expensive. tiles are great for mixing and matching and rugs give an added comfy feel to your outdoors. Check out these cool floorings to bedeck your box.

FAB HABITAT

FAB HABITAT

You can coze up any balcony on a budget! Check out this cute and affordable makeover.

LIGHTING

Hopefully your balcony is equipped with some electricity, but if not there are some nice LED options. Lighting is a nice addition to your balcony space, it creates the mood and ambience up there. Do you want a party platform or a romantic rendezvous? You have a few options for the ultimate elevated experience. Places like Walmart and Target have solar powered lanterns/lighting which are decorative and affordable. There is always the string light option and I will say there has been a few that are a bit different than the plain ole bulbs of yore. I personally love a combination of candles and decorative lanterns. You might also want to think about making lighting interchangeable perhaps to satisfy your holiday expressions.

PRIVACY

“I always feel like, somebody’s watching me…” Rockwell said it best. I have to say this is my favorite addition to any balcony. We have all been there. You get up, you want to do a nice long stretch and take in the outside air and you don’t want to get dressed doing it or perhaps you are trying to have cuddle time with your mate, but don’t Mr. Jones next door all up in your biz. Curtains are romantic flowing in the wind, but if you want to find something a bit more substantial there are a variety of attachable screens that will tend to not just your privacy, but also your sun intake. If you are looking for something that will add to your balcony decor, try looking for vintage wooden screens at your local thrift shop and paint them with reckless abandon. Here are few ideas you can find just using that good ole google search.

FURNITURE

Depending on how big or small your balcony is will determine how much furniture and what types will provide a comfortable setting. I love the removable and foldable tables/bars you can utilize for eating al fresco. I am also in love with the cool and cozy balcony swings or maybe you prefer a full on hammock up there. Create a raised oasis by adding small tables with lanterns/candles, vertical planters to make your space green and alive, wall niches for succulents or books, or add some art for fun. One of my favorite balcony makeovers it the transformation into an outdoor theater idea. Make a nice sit in movie area, perfect for bingeing and cuddling watching your favorite flicks. An outdoor heater or fire bowl can bring warmth even on those crispy, Fall evenings. YouTube has DIY projects galore from tool-free furniture to high rise pergolas, there’s plenty to explore.

You’d be surprised how beautiful and creative you can make this small or large outdoor space. Decor options are endless. From vertical planters to palette furniture with cushions of modern, vintage, or sleek designs. You can adorn with cozy chairs and bistro tables, add a small cocktail/tea station, or a swing. It’s truly an elevated blank canvas for the taking. Need some inspiration? Check out my Pinterest board for other ideas!

La Flora Decora

I love getting flowers, but I love having them add to my home decor…

unsplash-image-eHlVZcSrjfg.jpg

One of the things I miss about New York besides the unlimited fashion catwalk or the music venues or the drive by cocktails, it’s actually the flowers. I used to love walking briskly down the sidewalks and seeing men with bouquets of flowers running to catch the train, or watching women carry their groceries with a simple bouquet of lilies peeking out their bags. There’s something about fresh flowers adorning your dining table or a little assortment on an end table that just brings a little something. As Spring has sprung, this is a great time to enjoy some flower power inspirations, whether freshly cut or fauxtastic.

My only problem with fresh flowers is they die. Some are great dried, but others leave a heap of dead petals behind. Faux flowers used to put me off, they appeared chintzy and dull. Those days are gone. Now you have great choices for faux florals that you can also paint vibrant or muted colors depending on your style or mood of rooms. I collected a few bouquet ideas for you to celebrate the renewal of Spring and to give your home a fresh, floral makeover.

Wreaths

Wreaths are always a good idea to perk up any front door, choose from large Peonies to delicate Rhododendrons. I’m thinking about trying to make one of these, but I’m not the crafty type and if you’re anything like me, you’ll just give Cari a call, and have her make one for you.

Framed

This is an easy way to show off your artsy skill. An age old process of pressing flowers and turning them into framed art creates a whimsical, vibrant, or bohemian accent. I love seeing these framed bouquets as well, looks expensive but really easy to DIY your own.

But this Vazzzz...

I think it’s cool when you find flowers in unexpected containers. A classy vase is always nice depending on the bouquet, but I love seeing flowers hanging on the wall in test tubes, or coming out of a skull head. I also like when flowers are mixed with things like fruit or vegetables. I love putting my flowers in unique vintage bottles and I prefer small little ones around the house. Depending on your choice of flowers will most likely determine the type of display you’ll want and it can be as simple or as robust as you’d like.

Flower Power

Your display will only be as powerful as the flowers you choose, whether it’s faux or real. My favorite types to use are peonies, lavender, dahlias, and hydrangeas. Even roses are good for painting interesting colors. Tulips in the springtime are always lovely because they bring so much color, they look great in kitchens. Try putting some little arrangements in the bathroom or on your nightstand. You’d be surprised at how much it’ll add to your decor and you can do it all year round!

Arrangements

If you are anything like me and your crafty gene was lost in your creation, don’t worry, we have plenty of local floral experts who can arrange some mighty fine displays for your home or events. Whether real, silk, or paper, these local petalmeisters have a real knack for arranging florals, some even have workshops and subscription services.

Local Flower Farms

Don’t forget how many wonderful farms are in and around RVA to buy your fresh flowers. Some even carry dried flowers for your displays.

The Colors of My Life

Colors are so powerful when it comes to setting a mood, selling or buying a house, or capturing a feeling…

All My Colors (in order): My house exterior, My house interior, the velvet blue furniture I’m dreaming of, the black that comes with the Aston Martin, and Valentino red I love to don as frequently as possible.

All My Colors (in order): My house exterior, My house interior, the velvet blue furniture I’m dreaming of, the black that comes with the Aston Martin, and Valentino red I love to don as frequently as possible.

You know when you’re dreaming and something catches your eye and it leaves you with such a desire that you want it to become part of you? That’s how I feel about color. I’m sure all you design freaks are in the know that Pantone chose not one, but two colors of the year for 2021. I guess since 2020 was such a dull grey that had to spice things up. Funny enough they chose Illuminating Yellow and Ultimate Gray, how contrary and a good depiction of the past and future.

“Sherwin-Williams sets revenue records as DIY paint sales jump during pandemic.”

I’ve always found yellow to be an abhorrent color. I felt the only places it looked good on were lemons, bananas and the sun, but I’ve started to warm up a little to certain shades. Anyone who is familiar with my brand, knows I am a color loyalist — red and black will most likely be my go-to when choosing representation and clothing. My mother hated my goth phase in high school, “You know in Panama prostitutes wear black!” It gave me great satisfaction putting a sole red bandana in my hair to satisfy her discontent. I did however go through a strong purple phase, especially with hair colors (mom loved that). Each time I wear red I am complimented highly. It suits my passions, my culture, and my eye. Black, well, black says bold, it makes a statement that is serious, yet chic and I like that. I think after my obsession of wanting to fit in, becoming a slave to the United Colors of Benetton, it only seemed logical that my rebellious side take over, leaving black as my only option to convey how I was feeling (angsty) and besides, what color displayed The Cure and Depeche Mode better?

img_1329.jpg

The memory of color is etched in my brain. I can remember the shade of green our 1970’s leather living room couch wore and I remember the electric blue hot pants my neighbor wore on her first day of high school. I recall only choosing the Midnight Blue crayon to shade my Fashion Plates’ designs until it diminished, unusable, and wished they had more than one in there. I still love that color to this day. I know I cringe at the sight of pastels, and coral seems to incite a certain gag reflex in me. I met a girl once who had Synesthesia and I was so fascinated that every time she would see or think of numbers it was a different color. I giggled as I asked her what painting by numbers was like. When I used to see gold in homes, it used to make me think of chintzy, gaudy things, now it has become a marketable trend. I think it’s safe to say that colors can remark an era of time, think turquoise and yellow kitchens of the 1950s, but who knew that a shade of pink could define an entire generation?

Color invokes emotion, memory and sets a mood. It is a factor in why some houses sell and others don’t. If I do a walkthrough for an upcoming listing and the walls are painted with an unattractive color, I tell them they need to paint. I’ve had clients pass on a bid because they didn’t like the color of the house, even though they could very well paint it the color of their dreams. I showed a house once that had a beautiful dining area with Emerald green accented walls accompanied with vintage wallpapering. I had to remind my clients to see the rest of the house before putting an offer, they loved that room so much.

We, as Agents, tend to steer listers towards neutrals, but I don’t hesitate to add color as a future option for my purchasers. It helps them set an individual tone to their home and envision what it could be. We are currently in a moody, vivid trend with home paint colors, which I am loving. I like to see a bathroom that’s painted black with brass fixtures, or a dining room that has a darker shade of blue on it’s walls. I think it pops and creates a unique atmosphere. When I lived in New York, I painted the living room this burnt sienna color and had warm hues and textures adorning it, think Morocco. We never had a guest who stayed awake in that room, there was always at least one person who fell asleep peacefully in a room full of people. I was proud to create that reaction because it meant my home was that comfortable.

Trends or no trends, color is an important aspect to home. It helps us express who we are and how we want others to feel. It’s powerful in it’s aesthetic and what it does to your psyche. I view color the way I view art, I feel it. If I walk into a room and I see Drunk Tank Pink, I’m going to instantly hurl. As you can deduce, pink is not my favorite color. Technology has made it so easy to create colors that are one of a kind or mock that of a bird or a classic car you love. So much inspiration, so little space! So, as the weather starts to warm up and you’re making your list of home improvements this Spring, think about how you want your house to look, inside and out. If you are thinking about selling this year, it’s a perfect time for you to be picking out your curb appealing shades. In the meantime, enjoy the blue skies, golden sun, and budding greens we are currently having, we’re due for a more colorful kind of year, no?

If you are thinking about selling your home and need some help guiding you through the process, please feel free to contact me. I’m more than happy to help you get the best value for your property and as quickly as possible.

My Cousin Vintage

Vintage is the new trend for 2021 and I couldn’t love it more! From vintage cameras to art deco mirrors to jade glass vases, giving your home a new luck can cure any lock down.

Check out my Pinterest Board

WHAT YOU SAID

• Vintage Fabrics for pillows, curtains, etc.

• Taxidermy

• Fenton Hobnail Glass

• Bar Carts

• Hat Boxes

• Pie Safe

• Black & White Photos

• Bar Carts

• Postcards

• Vintage Ads/Magazine Cover Art

• Old Radios, Cameras, Typewriters, Gramophones

• Crochet

I like the sleekness of modern things. The design itself is quite attractive, but to me it lacks depth. It’s like your cousin who wears a Japanese designer whose cuts are as sharp as a chef’s knife, while you prefer the texture, richness and tradition of Chanel. Don’t get me wrong, I love modern design, but preferably not in my home. I’m more of a Refined Industrial gal, I love textures and richness in a room, but I also love traditional pieces that have a history. I’ve always had a love of vintage, even as a child I recall an affinity for homes that had a timeless appeal. Vintage is my go to when I want to start a conversation. The nice thing about vintage decor is that it can incorporate different eras. Some people will continue to love their mid-century credenzas while others will venture to find a Victorian style vanity. I sometimes think I was born in the wrong era.

It is predicted that 2021 will highlight vintage home decor and I couldn’t be more thrilled. Oh to find an oil rain lamp or 1950’s bar cart. We are seeing a revival of art deco styles with peacock plumage and gold trimmings, but because Covid has changed our living spaces, you’re going to find more neutral and earth tones as well as deep moody hues. You can compliment those styles with some really nifty finds around town. I was actually shocked at how many of these local shops there were to accommodate such tastes. What a nice discovery!

So, while we are still cozied up at home, perhaps 2021 will get you motivated to restyle your living and working spaces. A good refresh will change the entire mood of your abode which will lead to inspiration, freshness, and motivation. Items like old typewriters, vintage farm tools, art deco style mirrors, or antique trunks bring a cool nostalgia to any room.

If you are looking for more architectural pieces to add to your home, look no further than Caravati's Inc or Governor's Architectural Antiques. You’ll find unique, historic and detailed fixins from clawfoot tubs to newel posts to ironworks. I have found some beautiful ornate woodwork at these places, including beautiful mantles to transform any den/living room.

Sometimes you can find these things in thrift stores or estate sales, but here are a few vintage vendors here in Richmond to check out:

Quarantine Chronicles: Class is in Session

Class will soon be in session. Are you and your child prepared for a semester of learning experiences?

Alright parents, you’ve got about a month to prepare for the colossal upheaval of your child’s schooling. After talking with some parents who are going through the horror of working from home and also home schooling, it was apparent to me that there should be some guidelines for those needing some guidance when it comes to virtual learning and setting up your home learning centers.

  1. Make sure there are no distractions. Young learners need consistency and structure. Make sure the space you put them in is free from distractions like TVs, iPads, Video Games, etc.

  2. Create a space for them. Include things like a good table/desk to do their activities at. Organize all their school materials using shelves or cubbies so they can find them easily. Make sure they know to put things back where they found them so it stays nice and neat and teaches them to take responsibility for their own materials.

  3. Schedule. Make sure they have a consistent schedule every day so they know when to work and when to take a break. Get them a special clock or set up an alarm to ensure they are moving through the day with full activities.

  4. Download materials for them. There are some wonderful websites where you can download and print material to further their curriculums.

  5. Do not interact with them while they are in “school”. Don’t disrupt the schedule. Keep them focused on their work so you can do yours.

  6. Eat lunch with them. This will help you stay connected and create a nice little family break with them, you can ask them about their day and what they are learning so they feel like there is some separation from home and school.

  7. Make sure they go outside. Give them a recess time for them to play outside, it’s important for them to get some energy out so they can concentrate when they come back to learning.

  8. Make sure your teens are staying on track instead of social media’ing their way through the semester. Take away cell phones while class is in session, and although, they don’t require a specific work station, you might want to check up on them from time to time to make sure they are actually working. They will soon understand what your life has been like!

Some of you might not have the space or money to create a learning center in your home. Here are some easy fixes to ensure your student is getting the space, quiet and materials they need.

  • Check Facebook/Craigslist/Next Door for desks , chairs, tables, and rugs.

  • Make sure it is separate from you.

  • Decorate the space with Maps, Science Facts, People in History, etc.

  • Make sure there’s enough space for them to do arts and crafts.

  • Be prepared for this space to get a bit messy!

  • Make sure you find some sort of storage unit for their materials.

Check out your county websites for more resources and information regarding distance learning. Check out my Pinterest page for other ideas!

Quarantine Chronicles: Daddy’s Domain

Dads need their own spaces as much as moms need their Lady Lair…

I like the significance of father. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think you need a father to be a great father, but I can truthfully say, I’m glad my dad was in my life because he surely didn’t have to be. I think if my dad had his own space, he would have been able to enjoy more things he was interested in.

The definition of what men should and shouldn’t be is a point of contingency to some. You’ve got dads who play chess and drink single malt Scotch. You’ve got garage dad who likes to tinker all day and drive real fast at night. You’ve got sports dad whose only dream is to watch Monday night football every single day of the week while he eats chicken wings and sips on Bud Light. In today’s world, you also have dad’s who enjoy crafting a good centerpiece. The point is, every dad has interests and every dad likes his alone time (just as every woman does!). So, I thought it’d be fun to show some cool ideas for dad rooms, which in turn made me want a dad room, I tend to have more masculine desires in decor. I freakin’ love whiskey, playing poker and watching soccer! Anyway, check these out:

The Cigar/Smoke Room

I want this one for myself. I truly love smoking and smelling cigars. I also love whiskey. My man brain wish is to have a room like this downstairs in my fantasy home, but you can’t only get to it through a secret door. Jeremy Siers is this dude I just started following and he’s a dad and honestly, he’s pretty rad. He built this custom cigar room in his home all you smoke lovers will enjoy.

The Tinker Room

I’ve got a man who builds stuff and is a natural tinkerer, unfortunately he knows nothing about cars! I think guys who like to tinker long for a workshop/garage of some sort. Besides the right quality tools, I think the key to a good workshop is organization, so shelving and storing is important. A workbench is crucial, make sure it’s a good size and height to work comfortably at. Lighting is also beneficiary, especially for gear heads and a good wireless speaker to keep you motivated. Here’s some great examples:

Sound it Out

Not only do I live with a builder, but also a musician. Musicians absolutely need their own space, for the love of god, take that riff somewhere else! You may be tired of the microphone-filled drawers which have taken over your household (because he just hasn’t found the right sound yet) or when you’re office becomes your shared paradiddle and flam station and you keep knocking into the high hat trying to get to your bottle of wine? These man rooms are great for outdoor areas or basement space so when he and the other “living the dream” boys come over for a jam session, you can send them on their way. PS there are a ton of videos on turning your basement, garage or attic into a home music studio.

Sports/Gaming Bar

Yes ladies, I know some of you are very anti-sports and know when you’re being asked to make your famous seven layer dip, it’s game day. So while he’s hootin’ and hollering at the tv, you can enjoy folding laundry, baking a cake, doing craft stuff, working, calling your bestie, or giving yourself a spa treatment in peace! Make sure there’s a fridge in there so you’ll never have to replenish those White Claws, I mean Bud Bottles. Seriously though, a good sports/rec getaway has a bar area, snacks, a good fridge and don’t forget a gigantic flat screen and comfy seats. If he loves to play as much as he loves to watch, he’ll want to indulge in some gameplay, enjoy some pinball or cue it up.

So as I was going through all these Daddy Dens, i decided I wanted my own proving that just like moms, dads need their self-love space. Whether they are working on restoring a 1967 R60/2 BMW motorcycle, perfecting their Radiohead cover songs, or watching the big game, these are breeding grounds of bonding moments for your children. So, happy Father’s Day to you dads out there teaching your kids how to change tires, play a guitar solo, play chess, bust a move or play Mineecraft, you’re doing an excellent job!

Quarantine Chronicles: Summer Rising

Summer is on the horizon and as sizzlin’ begins, we want our backyards to be on fire!

Welcome to Summer everyone! It’s definitely not the best intro into it and personally I am finding more peace at home despite the chaos on the outside. I mowed the lawn yesterday. I have quite a sizable treeless yard. I sat back on my small porch, looked out to my domain, and thought —now what? I have this outdoor space that is basically empty and since my pool is officially closed for Summer, what the hell am I gonna do to get my solar vitamin D?

Since most pools, including mine, are either going out of business or closed for the year, I am thinking real hard in investing in some sort of aqua relief. There’s also way too much green back here! So, maybe I’ll plant some vivid marigolds and zinnias. I also have a porch just dying for some pretty sun blocking drapes. It truly doesn’t have to take too much time or money to spruce up your backyard.

We are all trying to manage our money wisely at this time, but we also want to be able to enjoy the upcoming Summer months. It will also give you yet another project to work on whilst being homebound.

DIY DECKS/PATIOS

I don’t have a deck, but I’m seriously considering making this. It’s amazing what a little elevation can bring to a yard and even add resale value to it. It is also a perfect space to create something warm and relaxing.

Build This at Home Depot

I kind of love this. It’s simple, yet enticing.

Pallet Decks

Probably the most easily constructed and inexpensive instadeck!

Pea Gravel

You don’t have to spend a ton of money to have a nice clean space to lounge in. Pea gravel is inexpensive and virtually a simple install.

DIYPeaGravelPatio9.jpg

You can always buy inexpensive Stone Pavers for an easy install under $500.

OUTDOOR SEATING: TIRES

I’m amazed at how easy it is to utilize recycled tires. So many options! From planters to chairs to traditional tree swings, tires can create colorful and comfortable backyard options.

Whether I’m basking, sipping, or lounging, outdoor seating is a must for ultimate backyard hanging. Not only is it affordable to make, but they are easy to move around a yard, you can stack them for height, and you can make some pretty spectacular interchangeable cushions from chic to casual.

COLOR

Adding color to a backyard is easy. You’ll want to stay out there longer if you have some nice vibrant colors to enhance your outdoor time. Add a rug for some texture. Paint some planters. Paint some of your fence and/or pavers. Add a beautiful fabric to your pergola or canopy. You’ll be surprised at the effect.

Rugs

Add a nice outdoor rug to your patio or deck for added texture and color. Wayfair has tons to choose from and lots of discounts!

Decorative Pillows

A very simple way to spruce up your patio furniture is to simply add some lively decorative pillows. World Market has some nice deals and patterns.

Stencilling Pavers

This is a very cool and refreshing idea. You can add stenciled patterns to otherwise ordinary pavers. You can find some very nice ones on Etsy.

Colorful Drapes

Colorful and patterned drapes/curtains on any pergola or porch will not only give you privacy and shade you from the sun, but will brighten your backyard for sure!

Waterproof-Cushions-Outdoor-Fabric.jpg
privacy-options-pergola-curtains.jpg

SCREENS

I love this idea for added privacy and shade. From recycled window shutters to pallets to organic bamboo, these screens will add that extra oomph to your rear end.

Cool and Modern

Add plants or paint for dramatic effect.

Recycled

This idea is fantastic. Find an architectural salvage yard and get you some old shutters. Bring them back to life with a little paint and voila!

Decorative

Choose decorative metal, wood, vinyl screens.

3+ft.+H+x+6+ft.+W+Wisbech+Composite+Fence+Panel.jpg

LIGHTS

Just because the sun goes down, doesn’t mean the outdoor hang is over. Lighting is just as important as any other outdoor decor. Check these cool ideas to lighten up the mood.

LightTape or LED Lighting

Have LightTape or LED lighting installed to light up deck and patio stairs, fences, and railings.

String Lights

I don’t think this trend will ever die. I love walking into a backyard and seeing it lit up by the soft glow of the strands across the yard or patio. Why put the umbrella down? Just add some small lanterns or string lights to it.

Firebowls

We love a good fire pit, but how about something a bit more demure for setting our outdoor dining on fire? Here’s a video on how easy it is to make one, or you can get lazy and buy one from Frontgate

Quarantine Chronicles: Make Room for Mommy

Moms deserve some peace and quiet, and these days they are probably needing it for their sanity. Check out these great ideas for mom sanctuaries.

I’m sure during this time you mothers out there are just needing a space to call your own. Well, this is the time to start dreaming! I chose these very cool mom spaces where you can retreat, no matter your lifestyle. The way men need their sports rooms, man caves, and music studios, we women need our zen dens, libation havens, and creativity quarters.

Just like men, women have a variety of interests when it comes to how they want to spend their time. I think the whole point in finding your mom lair is to separate from all things work, unless work is how you relax? Additionally, a place just for you. These sanctuaries can be a room in your house, a detached shed or greenhouse, a gazebo a or you can even convert your garage into your own private Momville.

My dream space would include the following:

  • Journals

  • A mini fridge

  • Crossword and Jigsaw Puzzles

  • Some artwork of my choosing

  • A lock on the door

  • Books to read

  • A record player station

  • My favorite whiskey and wine

  • A nice comfortable place to lay or sit

  • Great mood lighting

Some things to consider in having your mom haven are shelves, a built-in desk, nice lighting and maybe a window, some plants, cushions and a lot of them, and electricity. Moms deserve some peace and quiet sometimes and making space for that is part of self-care, and let’s be frank —sanity. The most important part is to have all those things that bring you comfort and peace in a small getaway.

Check out these cool spaces for inspiration!
