Home is more than four walls and roof. Home is a door opening to you, your family, your pets, your lifestyle, your neighborhood, your community, your city. It’s all encompassing on so many levels.

We're Going to the Backyard and We're...Gonna Get Married

It’s #NationalWeddingMonth and what better way to save duckets by having your celebration…

For me it was holding onto the magic of it all. What woman doesn’t want to sip her tea or coffee in the morning while gazing upon the spot she said “I Do”.
— Kai P.

Kai and Sam Parker tied the knot at their gorgeous historic farmhouse last year.

It’s February, which means love is in the air and it’s officially National Weddings Month. February does own the most weddings to a single day. The trajectory of matrimony has evolved in recent times. No longer are couples waiting to buy homes after they tie the knot and couples are being more cost conscious when thinking about the thousands of dollars spent on a one day event.

Think about it. Would you rather start your life together in debt or would you rather have a budgeted wedding day where you can maybe take a fantastic honeymoon or maybe save for a future endeavor? I love a backyard wedding. There’s so much you can do without the hassle of extra costs or stress from dealing with vendors to time restraints to transportation. Home is where the heart is in this scenario. As of 2022, the average cost of a wedding in the United States is $30,000, which includes the ceremony and reception and that’s only in some states. Depending on where you are, you could be looking at 40K+ for your big day. Imagine how much you could within your home for that much! I don’t—thank you very much.

Here are a few money saving ideas for your backyard wedding, but remember, it is about what you want in the end.

Local Author Ward Howarth and wife of 20 years, Amy had a beautiful and intimate wedding.

It felt more personal, less formal. No rules, just more like us.
— Amy H.

Lights: You can’t go wrong with a dusky wedding. Ground lanterns to light up walkways or hanging jars with electric candles. And of course string lights will work nicely for the occasion.

Picnic: A great idea is having a picnic wedding in the backyard. Having blankets strewn about as you lay about for the happy couple.

Projectors: Using a projector to provide a slideshow backdrop can be sentimental and fun.

Trees: Trees are great for swings, hanging lights, photos, fabrics, and are great to hold a laundry line where guest can pin up the polaroids or sentimental notes.

Privacy Fences: These are great to hang family photos, lights, or use as a photo backdrop.

Food: Use a local caterer or make it a potluck, it doesn’t have to be from a Michelin star restaurant so make it easy.

We were about to make a life together. We loved our house and it just felt like the natural thing to do. It is a memory that is etched into where we live and love.
— Monica S.

Have a look at these RVA backyard lovebirds!

Karen and Doug had an intimate ceremony in their backyard and then did it again in Poe’s.

Kristy and Keith Rader opted for the front yard underneath their pretty magnolia tree—how Southern of y’all.

Victoria and Joe Deroche did the casual thing with her children by their sides under the pergola.

Austen and Savannah vowed to have a great time with their fun backyard nuptials.

Making Room

Amanda Scudder is the Owner and a Certified Professional Organizer in Richmond, VA.

It was a very sunny morning when I met up with Amanda Scudder, Owner and Certified Professional Organizer of Sprucely, Home and Lifestyle Solutions. This one woman show drives this passion project to helping those organize their homes so they can have space for themselves and others, inside and out.

As Fat Rabbit morsels filled space in our bellies, I took some time to discover that organizing goes beyond purging one’s closet, but can become a healthy and liberating habit. I don’t know about you, but I cannot work in a cluttered space for too long. I also cannot deal with the overwhelming sensation of sentimental disposal. I tend to want to keep everything from wine corks to scribble filled napkins. It is the complete opposite of a close friend whose monthly firepit hang ends in the remnants of old love poems and greeting cards.

Amanda began her career with a Masters in Social Work and was all too familiar with implementing effective systems as part of her work. She is also a very kind and gentle person. So while she did her stint in Social Work, including working for United Way, she felt like something was unfulfilled in her. The Universe, my friends, is a powerful ally. It wasn’t until she randomly went to a retreat and met someone needing assistance with organizing her home, that the switch flipped. She had found the missing piece. Sprucely was born out of that passion after doing her time learning and getting certified at the Institute of Challenging Disorganization®.

Doing the unstuck is hard. Where do you start? How do start? Why do you need it? I know when I am doing a thorough clean and organizing things in my home, the energy shifts. I’m able to be more productive, my mood is lifted—of course til I mess it all up again! Many people have a hard time—putting things away, making space for what’s important, or parting with things that have meaningful significance. Amanda is able to facilitate and support those who are ready to take that leap, but she does so without creating resistance. She allows her clients space to be ready for such a task, but also gives them motivations to ponder.

Amanda is also quite certified in not only being a professional organizer, but is also one if not the only local Organizer that is a practicing CPO-CD (Certified Professional Organizer in Chronic Disorganization®). This required her to evaluate case studies, medical histories, and work with a mentor. She has also completed intensive studies in helping those with such disorders as ADHD, Anxiety, Depression, Hoarding Disorder, PTSD, TBI and those with individuals suffering from OCD. Her interest lies in the “why” rather than the “what”. A lot of her job is helping those maintain a healthy routine of ‘putting things back where they belong’.

As Realtors®, we help our clients facilitate moving in and moving out of houses, Amanda helps them in both those transitions giving them a real brand new start. She helps clients get rid of the clutter before a move and shows them how to create efficient and good organizational habits to begin their new homes. But it is what Amanda does with clients who are in a life transition that I find dear. She helps clients find a meaningful and resourceful place for those items they part with so that they are beneficial to someone else in need. For example, someone who adheres to lots of books that they don’t necessarily need, could contribute to a library or bookshare. She shows others that the significance in that item could be meaningful to someone else, therefore releasing them, but never pushes them.

I have a box in my home that I will never get rid of. My ‘history’ if you will, can be found easily and within reach, but I tend to have lots of clutter around me. I have lots of clutter in my life as well. I think about how it makes me feel to transform that clutter into an inviting space for me to create and be tranquil in, and it is a desire of mine. Both Amanda and I agree that there is not set “way” to organize—every individual is different with various challenges. Some people need auditory cues while others need the visual, there just isn’t a set method to it all. You have to do what works for you and in the time it works for you. Sometimes we just need a little help seeing the trees through the clutter, while some of us just want to create a roadmap to organizational bliss.

If you are feeling overwhelmed and don’t know where to start, Sprucely can help! If you’d like to have a consultation with Amanda to figure out how to make space in your life, click below and schedule and appointment.

Slimming Down RVA

Eating healthy in RVA was never so easy. We have everything from Vegan to Mediterranean cuisine readily available to help you get that Summer bod in check!

Photo by: Jo Ann Breaux | Kismet Modern Kitchen

Yes, it’s true, we have some amazing restaurants here and the number is growing. We also have Operation Summer Bod Health Journey initiating amongst our denizens. So although, I really want to indulge in our A-Class bakeries and hear the crunch of Southern fried chicken, I’m on the hunt for some healthier options.

Kismet modern Kitchen

This newly installed amazingness is nothing short of tantalizing flavors and fresh plates. Portion control may be a little harder here.

Little Nickel

Little Nickel has the biggest and some of the best salads. They are crisp and light and you can add healthy protein options.

Cava | Mezeh | Roots Natural Kitchen

I’m lumping these three together because although, different flavors same concept. If you want delicious, quick, healthy bowls, i love these spots who have various locations in RVA.

North End Juice Company

I cannot say enough good things about this little gem. Organic and whole foods splendidly made.

Fresca on Addison

This sweet place has been in RVA for quite sometime and has always been a great dining option for those looking for a tasty vegetarian or vegan dish.

Fighting Fish

You can’t go wrong with eating Japanese food. You won’t be disappointed with the sushi and dishes at Fighting Fish.

Jannat Indian Cuisine

I don’t know about you, but I get real tired of salads when I’m trying to be lose weight or be healthier. Indian food is one of the healthiest cuisines and probably the tastiest!

2023, RIC, and Me

A new beginning of RVA love…

Photo by: Jo Ann Breaux, Mural Walk | Downtown RVA

Welcome to 2023 y’all! I’m not a big resolution gal, but I am a “let’s improve on this” one. One of the things I’ve noticed is that people are not getting out. I think because Covid left us where we are, some of us are having a harder time, or perhaps an easier time enjoying the comforts of our homes. I get it, I definitely haven’t been as motivated to go out and when i do, I find myself in quite awkward verbal exchanges. I’ve never had that problem before. So, basically things have changed.

I’ve been thinking about that and how I want to improve my business, but also improve my relationship. No, not with my partner, but my relationship with my lover—RVA. The thing I’ve loved most about Covid, (can I say that?), is that I delved into exploring different areas around VA and I’ve decided I want to do more of that, but also do things around Richmond I’ve never done before. That’s the thing, isn’t it? I’ve known some people who’ve lived their entire lives in Richmond and don’t come Downtown or to the Fan even. So, I thought I’d share some RVAcentric things I want to do that I haven’t done in my 32 years in our lovely city. What will you do?

The Observation Deck

It’s temporarily closed but hopefully will reopen soon. I’d always heard about it but never been.

Virginia Museum of History and Culture

Yes, I know, insane I’ve never been here

Picnic at VMFA

I sometimes forget what a beautiful set this is for picnicking and journaling

The Veil and Nokoribi

My friends at Longoven and The Veil have created this amazing space for their new venture and I cannot wait to experience it!

Wheel Time at Clayground

I’ve never made anything pottery like in my life, so I want to create something in this medium!

Visit the ICA

I drive by it all the time, but never thought to actually go inside.

Some Bike Tour of RVA

Seems dumb for someone who has lived her to do a “tour” but I happen to think that this is a great opportunity to learn more about where I live and a great way to see the city on bike, in addition to photo ops.

I’ll probably be adding more to this list but I thought it would be a fun goal to look forward to in 2023. What are your plans?

Any Way You Slice It

No matter how you slice it, we will be celebrating #NationalPizzaMonth with these local pizza joints!

Photo by: Jo Ann L Breaux | Crozet Pizza

Having lived in New York for some time, you really do get to know your pie joints. There’s the I’m going to wait in line for an hour or two place and there’s the it’s 3am, my heels are killing me, I’m drunk and I just want a slice. One of my favorite images in Williamsburg, NY was watching the late night crowd sit on the curb and devour their piping hot slices from Anna Maria’s on Bedford.

A good slice should entail the following:

  • Handheld Capability

  • Fresh Ingredients, no I do not think Pineapple belongs on pizza. Canada, we love you, but you really messed this up.

  • A Solid Sauce, not too sweet and not too salty

  • A Perfect Crust, maybe a little char on there, but definitely omitting any cardboard like quality

  • Cheese, for the love of all that is holy, cheese but create ribbons of melty goodness from the pie to your mouth

We here in RVA have an abundance of pizza joints worth checking out and to satisfy all tastes, from Chicago to NY style, we’ve got it! So thank you Italy for taking the Chinese invention and bringing it to what it is today—the most perfect food on Earth. To celebrate #NationalPizzaMonth, I give you my faves in the city and yes, I know there are more to mention, but these are my most frequently and loved in the city.

The Hills Have It

I have dreams of Mama Zu. I miss ordering white pizza there. I miss the grit and the overwhelming smell of garlic. I can’t think about it too much or else I will begin shedding tears over the loss of my favorite culinary delight in Richmond. Thank goodness for the Italians of RVA who created these pies of delights.

8 1/2 | The Fan | Church Hill
My hands down favorite pie in RVA. The fresh ingredients alone tantalizes the taste buds. I love grabbing this za and sitting in Scuffletown Park wolfing it down.

Dinamo | Oregon Hill
The former Mama Zu’s sweet lil cousin site, it’s no surprise they have knock your socks off pizza. Fresh and perfect and enjoyed in a quaint and warm environment.

Galley Kitchen | Stratford Hills
Not of the Mama Zu family, but of another established RVA restaurant family, Galley has some of the best pizzas I’ve ever experienced. Thanks to the talents of Giustino Riccio for bringing his masterpiece pizzas to the neighborhood diner. The Fennel and Sausage is a must have!

Pizza and Beer Have No Fear

Nothing makes a greater combo than beer and pizza and I have these places I enjoy for this.

The Hop Craft Pizza and Beer | The Fan
I love the pizza here and it’s just a bonus that they have a craft brew market adjoined to the dining area. Try the Pickleback, so good! Unique options and if you’re not feeling pizza, get their meatballs to go and add it to your favorite pasta.

PBR | The Fan | Mechanicsville
I like this place for its Fan location for the patio and to be honest the pizza is pretty solid. Sometimes I get tired of the whole “personal” pizza schtick, but if you are with a group, this place is fantastic.

Triple Crossing Beer | Fulton
I think sometimes simple is best. A good woodfire pizza at a brewery is a perfectly simplistic and go to combo. I love their pizzas a lot.

The Only Living Pizza (s) in RVA

I love New York Style pizza and it has to be foldable goodness where you need extra napkins to soak up the puddles of grease collected.

Jo-Jo’s Pizza | Downtown | Midlothian
How could I not love a pizza joint with my name? This is where I go when I’m craving The City. Their lunch special is where it’s at: 2 slices and one bevvy for about $10 (I remember when it was $6). Midlo location is open til 9pm and downtown is unfortunately just until 3pm. I love how they operate like in new york, even implementing the “NEXT!” prompt. A pizza worth a NY attitude.

Zorch Pizza | Carytown
Food truck turned brick and mortar, Zorch satisfies the New York pizza yearnings, but also tantalises your tastebuds. Fresh ingredients and Vegan pies are available!

Benny Ventano’s | The Fan
One slice will do ya, but if you are feeding an army, one pie could do the same at Benny’s. 28” of slathery goodness.

The Late Night

I don’t know about you, but there is nothing worse than having a night on the town with your friends and then the immense hunger portion of the night hits you like a ton of bricks. It’s hard enough finding food after 10 here, but finding the perfect slice won’t be as challenging.

Patrick Henry Pub & Grill | Church Hill
While you are waiting for James to make you a drink, order a thin crust personal pizza here. It’s an unsuspecting spot to enjoy a pie, but it is actually incredibly good and satisfying.

The Veteran

Mary Angela’s | Carytown
Institution, Mary Angela’s comforts me with futbol and New York style pizza and is reminiscent of my college years at VCU.

The Comfort Za

You have those days that are just lazy. You want to binge on stream and not get out of those jammies type of day? These are my go to convenient and easy spots.

Christian’s | The Fan | West End
if you can deal with the starving VCU students at the Fan location, you will get a pizza that is very tasty. Only comes in one size but you can bet they’ll be leftovers for a day or two. I love this place for the convenience, slices, and overall goodness.

Belmont Pizza | The Fan
Belmont has been a consistently great place to get a pie, nothing fancy, just simplistic delivery/pickup goodness.

To Top It Off!

A pizza is only as good as its ingredients.

Hot for Pizza | Carver
I would not expect anything less from the boys at Cobra Cabana, the novelty alone is reason to delve into this pie heaven. If you are looking for unique pizzas with flare or some great Vegan options, this is the spot. The variety of toppings and crust is enticing, my only complaint is—$6 toppings are a bit much.

A Day in the Slice

Crozet Pizza | Crozet, VA
One of my favorite things to do in the Fall is go apple picking at Chiles Peach Orchard and Farm Market in Crozet, VA. We then go over to Starr Hill and have some brews and finally we go to the best pizza spot, Crozet Pizza. I cannot say enough great things about this place. The pizza is consistently knockout good and the service is excellent. It is the perfect end to a perfect day in Crozet. Sure, you have to travel an hour and fifteen, but man is it worth the experience.

What’s Your Favorite Slice?

Roman the Yard

Capitol Opera presents “The Coronation of Poppea” featuring RVA Baroque and The Latin Ballet of Virginia.

Photos by: Jo Ann Breaux

Hosts Melissa Burgess displays her beautiful artworks

Nero and Poppea played by Max Alexander Cook and Anne O Byrne

Liberto, Mercurio, and Valletto played by Brian Hobbs, Mitchener Howell, and Evan Heiter

Seneca played by Lisa Hogan

Part of what is amazing about the city we live in is its cultural arts. It’s been difficult getting back into the swing of things post pandemic isolation, but I’m determined to continue to showcase all that RVA has to offer and Saturday night was no exception.

As Marketing Director for The Latin Ballet of Virginia, I have a vision to integrate culture, community, and education into our home here. As a Realtor®, I want to be able to show clients how they can invest not only in their homes, but can also add to the growth and identity of neighborhoods and communities throughout Richmond. So what does all this have to do with Romans? Well I’ll tell you…

Melissa Burgess and husband, Geoff have a lovely home in the Southside of RVA and were very gracious in opening up their backyard to Capitol Opera’s presentation of “The Coronation of Poppea”, an Italian opera by Claudio Monteverdi telling the story of Emperor Nero and his mistress Poppea and her rise to collect the throne to become Empress of Rome. Capitol Opera, along with RVA Baroque, a musical ensemble specializing in historical instruments and techniques, and The Latin Ballet of Virginia collaborated and presented an enchanting evening of art, music, dancing and singing.

It is always amazing when you can bring neighbors or a community together to share in something special. Melissa Burgess showcased her beautiful paintings around the yard and fifty lucky audience members became enraptured with the telling of this historically driven piece. It was made even more endearing watching a neighbor set up camp in front of her window while she ate her dinner and enjoyed the show. The evening was full of serendipity and I was honored to be able to capture some moments of four very talented entities. Some of the best moments are unexpected, but discovering something new in the town you live in is magical. Catch Capitol Opera’s last two performances on July 22nd and 24th and for more information on how you can help these organizations thrive and enchant other audiences, click below.

Robble, Robble!

Celebrating #NationalBurgerMonth with my RVA mouthwatering picks!

When I was a kid, fast food was a divine treat. To get a Happy Meal from McDonald’s felt like your last class being Study Hall. But, in all honesty, my mom’s pan fried burgers were better than what Ronald had to offer. It was the first real meal she taught me how to make, and I, to be humbly honest, I make a pretty damn good burger…I think. The burger fits in that perfect foods list, the one that includes pizza, pasta, and tacos. Besides, who doesn’t have a nostalgic moment with a burger?

Now that I’m grown up, my burger palate has broadened, but not that much. I’m pretty simple when it comes to my ‘all beef patty, special sauce, lettuce, cheese’. For me, I want a burger that has quality protein, a good bread source, and varied cheese options. Sometimes I like a spinach, brie and bacon combo and other times I’ll go more traditional with cheddar, bacon and pickles. I like my lettuce shredded and I think mayo on a patty dulls it, not to mention I’m just not a fan of mayo on sandwiches. I do love a good dill or spicy relish, and I’m a fan of thinner burgers vs thicker ones.

Now that you know my burger dating profile, I’d like to share some of my favorite RVA burger joints to celebrate #NationalBurgerMonth. Bon appetit!

Beauvine

(Vegan/Vegetarian options available)

What I like about Beauvine is the quality of meat they use and their nostalgic resemblance to Dumont burger in Brooklyn (oh how I miss you!). They have tasty sauces like Béarnaise and Herbed Aioli and them duck fat fries are so good! Yes, they do have Vegetarian options and excellent service to boot. I love going in here getting a delicious burger, fries and the ROSTOV’S FRENCH ROAST COFFEE milkshake and spectating a soccer match on the telly.

Indian Fields Tavern

I got an inside scoop on this one and decided to check it out. I love this place all around, but the burger is delicious with a capital D! Listen to some acoustics on the lawn and enjoy their Charles City burger with bacon jam and double cream brie…holy hell it’s good. One of my favorite burgers and places to spend the afternoon.

Cobra Cabana

(Vegan/Vegetarian options available)

So it’s not a traditional burger persae, but a more abstract version. The Chopped Cheese does it for me. I had no idea of this NY originated sandwich which makes me shameful to my living there, but CC delivers this hearty, cheesy goodness on a perfectly grilled baguette. The hot dill relish is where it’s at! Add some fries and wash it down with a beer…heaven!

The Roosevelt

I have loved this cheeseburger since Roosevelt opened up their doors in 2011. I don’t know if it’s the bacon jam or the crafted cocktails that enhance this double pattied delight, but it’s a solid choice that makes sitting at the bar in a pretty environment, an burgerific experience.

Kreggers at Hand

(Vegan/Vegetarian options available)

I am pleasantly surprised by Kreggers. Their burger is always consistently good and I love the variety of options they have. They keep it simple, but still with some twists. A burger special on Tuesday for $8 is choice and even if the vibe there doesn’t do it for me, the staff is always super nice.

Patrick Henry Pub & Grille

(Vegan/Vegetarian options available)

PH makes a solid burger in a cool environment (check out the gem of the patio upstairs). You want burger with that bourbon? No problem. I like they have a variety of sauces to choose from and it’s just a solid bite you can have when you need something to absorb the alcohol and the darkness the basement pub provides.

Carytown Burgers and Fries

(Vegan/Vegetarian options available)

It’s always been my favorite. When I want something that is going to fill me up and leave me slumped and sleeping on the couch, it’s CBF with a side of Tater Tots. Solidly consistent and you can also get a side of milkshake with that!

Shake Shack

(Vegan/Vegetarian options available)

Milkshakes, Crinkle Fries, and a hangover cure for the masses, Shake Shack is Grade A yum . I know it’s not here yet, but after five years of standing in line in Bryant Park in New York salivating over my lunch breaks, I am quite certain this will be my fast food burger spot. We all have those, you know when you just need something to help you take your afternoon nap and you don’t want to stand in line for brunch. It will be like seeing a long lost lover after being separated for years. Shake Shack burgers are addictive and an unforgettable morsel.

These are just some of my favorites in RVA. I’m sure there are plenty that I have yet to discover! Feel free to comment on your favorite spots!

Celebrating National Brunch Month

Celebrating National Brunch Month in RVA!

Brunch is probably my favorite meal of the day. To be honest, I can do brunch any time, any day, any week. Sometimes I want to just wake up with a tub of coffee and not eat until I’m hangry, which is around 10:30am. I used to miss Saturday New York brunches, and don’t get me wrong, I still do, but it’s nice that I can get one now in RVA. Heritage was the best Brunch I’ve had in town and I hope it comes back, until then, check out these ten choice spots:

NOTE: All photos were taken from their respective restaurant sites.

SB’s Lakeside Loveshack

Now with two locations (Lakeside & The Fan), this RVA spot is the jam (yes they serve that too). It’s kid friendly, the staff is excellent and the food hits the right spots, and the best theme ever.

Millie’s Diner

Opened Wed-Sunday, this RVA institution ranks high on everyone’s list. Be prepared to wait your turn, but the result is pure delight. Millie’s never disappoints when it comes to their brunch items or their daily specials (the biscuits and gravy are divine).

821 Cafe

If I want to feel at home, I go to 821 where I know everyone is going to treat me and my family well. This is my hangover cure brunch spot and they make a decent Bloody Mary. I also like that they have plentiful Vegetarian/Vegan options.

Kuba Kuba

You want something that is going to make you feel all warm and fuzzy? Kuba Kuba has one of the best brunches in RVA. The Roast Pork Omelet is on point and the portions here are plentiful. Pair it up with a Cafe con Leche and leave room for the Tres Leches, you’ll be rolled out accordingly.

Helen’s

Another RVA fave, Helen’s brunch is perfect and if you’re lucky to sit outside the people watching doesn’t disappoint (Hello, Walk-of-shamers!). Simple, Southern, and Delicious!

Partarre

This little hidden gem is a delight. Don’t want to stand at Perly’s? Check out this nestled yumfest at the Linden Row Inn. Get you a seat outside and enjoy the quaint and tranquil environment. The food is also delectable.

The Jefferson Champagne Brunch

Looking for something a bit more extravagant? You gotta do it at least once, if you can get a reservation. Perfect for moms and special occasions, this is a fun treat with a beautiful setting. Love their waffle station and so much to choose from!

Metzger Bar & Butchery

I have nothing but good things to say about Metzger. If you want to up your brunch game, this is the place to be. You are guaranteed to not only have a superb brunchtail, but you will not be disappointed by the brunchfare served here. So good.

Lunch.Supper.

I’m thankful I can still get brunch at lunch or supper. This place has always been a favorite of mine. I’ve always been a fan of their breakfast sandwich. The staff has always been kind and I love their Bloody Mary’s. Grab a seat outside and it can be a quite pleasant brunch spot. Afterwards, you can tour Scott’s Addition’s breweries.

THE CONTINENTAL

Give me that Limeaid! Lots of options and kid friendly, I love the old school vibe here. I’ve never had a bad brunch here and the food is great!

My Beautiful Black Friends

Lady J RVA is celebrating Black History Month with her successful, inspiring and talented RVA friends!

We all know that history in our city runs deep, sometimes controversial, sometimes heroic, and most definitely interwoven into our diverse culture. We have become quite the progressive city over the years and although not the completely “woke” RVA we all see ourselves as, I’d like to think we are getting better.

From historic neighborhoods like Jackson Ward, aka “Black Wall Street”, honoring such greats as Maggie Walker, Charles Russell, and Lucy Goode Brooks to soulful restaurants like Mama J’s to local musicians like Chance Fischer, it cannot be dismissed how much our city is enhanced by African-American culture. So, in that honoring and celebration, I’d just like to point out a few individuals who bring a warm and fuzzy feeling to my world this February.

Queon “Q” Martin, CARTER™ Magazine | DNA America | ONE RVA | Soulidify Productions | Artist | Activist

No amount of titles can sum up what this individual is to me. I met Q one evening at a friend’s house. He is a fascinating story, and we quickly became emerged into each other’s worlds in our commonality of our work, art, and life’s vision, not to mention our love of karaoke. Q is one of the most inspiring, kind, and determined people I know. He makes you want to do better, he makes you want to believe in yourself. Although this New York transplant hasn’t lived in RVA very long, he has definitely made a deep mark here, both socially and politically. Capturing and leading the BLM movement here in RVA, educating the masses with his humble, but strong voice through his mediums, and a true creator for change, Q never disappoints with his visual storytelling and unique ideals. We should all be so driven to do better.

Kelli Lemon, Urban Hang Suite | A1 Minute

Kelli is one of those people you stumble upon and she immediately brings a smile to your face. She is successful, intelligent, and a force to be reckoned with. I met Kelli through a mutual friend and started watching her Coffee with Strangers series and instantly fell in love. I have mad respect for her efforts to bring a community together through the art of conversation. Her coffee house, Urban Hang Suite is a place of warmth, good food, talk, and music. She helped create the Jackson Ward Collective, a program that provides resources to Black-owned businesses, with a goal of helping the businesses owners learn, grow and own through networking hubs in historically Black communities. Additionally, she heads the initiative for establishing the Richmond Times Dispatch and Richmond.com as the leading source of video in the region and hosts A1 Minute, a daily snippet of RVA news. Kelli reigns as entrepreneur, consultant, media personality, and storyteller—a true Queen Bee.

DeShon Rollins, Dancer/Educator

I met DeShon as he was joining The Latin Ballet of Virginia. His vibrant personality shone as he soared through the air at great heights and his strength as a passionate dancer cannot be denied. This Virginia State University alumnus has been featured in the Washington Post and has studied at the prestigious Joffrey School of Ballet in New York City. He is currently dancing and teaching at The Latin Ballet of Virginia and recently toured and performed in Spain!

Glen Lewis, Dancer/educator/Choreographer

Just like DeShon, I met this shining star while working at The Latin Ballet of Virginia. Glen’s performances are full of grace and power. He has a B.F.A in Dance and Choreography and was awarded Outstanding Choreographer in 2009 from Virginia Commonwealth University. Glen's training began at the Governor School for the Arts and then continued at Richmond Ballet, Alvin Ailey Dance Theater, and the 'Nederland Dans Theater'. While studying at NDT, he was in the original cast set by internationally acclaimed choreographer Marco Goecke.

Justin Golden, Musician/Instructor/Loan Officer

Justin and I met at an open house strangely enough. When this Mortgage Advisor at America Mortgage LLC isn’t helping others buy homes, he is not just playing stages across Virginia, but most recently in France where he graced them for 2 weeks of bluesy magic. This impressively talented Piedmont Blues style guitarist is part of the Virginia Folklife Program where teaches Piedmont Blues and Gospel Guitar, Travis Picking, and Aural Training to all levels. He might be singing and playing the blues, but he is a joy to be around. Make sure you catch his next gig!

Spring Henderson Neal, Owner of Elite Catering

Just like her name, Spring reflects all that is joyous and flourishing. I met Spring at an event last year where her and her friendly staff laid out a spread full of heart and goodness. Her company Elite Catering, has provided delicious and savory dishes for many a wedding, corporate, and special events. Spring is one of those “memorable” people and her food is as well. She specializes in Southern cuisine and you’ll be licking your fingers for sure! Spring along with her sweet staff can bring soul to any event.

I’m giving away a $100 gift certificate to YOUR favorite local restaurant in RVA. I will be pulling and announcing the winner live on the internets on February 1st! Once you choose your nonprofit there, a portion of your Amazon order will be donated to that organization. Easy peasy! Just see me at the event and I’ll enter you into the raffle, if you contribute online instead, just send me confirmation of your donation and I’ll add you on the list. Click below to donate now and let’s show our city how much we love investing in her.

Catchy title, no? As we embark on another year, it is my goal to make 2022 one which will—not suck. When I decided to get into real estate, it was imperative that I go with the notion that I didn’t want to just specialize in home sales. What I want to do is get others to invest in their communities. It’s no secret that RVA has a tendency to participate in the ‘gentrification” game, but time and time again, I see people moving into “transitioning” neighborhoods, who just live there. I don’t see them getting involved in their communities which just makes me sad. This is why I love the agency I work for so much!

They, WE believe in supporting Richmond. Our local businesses and nonprofits are the backbone of our thriving city. I work with the Latin Ballet of Virginia because it is important to bring culture, education, and language through dance to RVA and its children. We have so many wonderful organizations helping to make Richmond a better place through cultural, educational, artistic, and musical experiences, and I wholeheartedly support that. We have one of the most vibrant and diverse art and music scenes out there and It has been a great influence on who I’ve become today. Without it, RVA would not have the identity, diversity, or character it’s been tattooed with throughout the years. So, I ask, are you ready to contribute to RVA in 2022?

RVA Holiday Gift Ideas

Not sure what to get them? Check out these unique and fun gifts from your favorite RVA businesses.

Nobody likes to admit our flaws, but I have to admit, I am a terrible procrastinator. I tend to have an extra dose of it during the holidays and I think it’s because I stress on my gift giving abilities (Will they like it? Is this too expensive? Do I have to get my boss a present too?) and truthfully, I hate giving gifts that will end up at the regifting party.

While my friends’ holiday cards fill my mailbox and my block is blindingly illuminated in decorations, I’m trying to send an email I rewrote five times now! Point being, holiday planning is not my forte, I prefer the receiving end of it all. When I go get to shopping, I’ll be finding the most unique and functional gifts for family and friends so not to mimic my aunt’s taste for Dollar Store bath soaps and porcelain chickens. So, if you are not into the socks and underwear crowd, try these unique and creative gift ideas for your family and loved ones. What better way to support our RVA small businesses!

Happy shopping! (click on photos for links)

World of Mirth

Everything about WOM is magical during holiday season. So many unique gifts from child to adult. I love the staff here usually, but during this time, they are uber patient and helpful. I mean where else can you find The Hip Hop Queens Oracle deck or Dolly Parton air freshener? If you want to gift your new mommy some cool baby duds, this is the spot!

Clay Ground

You know what a cool gift is? Art. You know what a cooler gift is? Art they can make. Clay Ground is a ceramic studio on the east end of Richmond, offering classes, open studio hours, private lessons, private events and membership. It is a really fun way to make art and new friends or you know, relive those Ghost scenes! Gift certificates are also available.

Alma’s RVA

If you are looking to support our local artisans as well as a local business owner, look no further than Alma’s. They have subscription boxes, gift certificates, and one of kind jewelry, glassworks, ceramics and so much more. I cannot tell you what a treat Northside got when Mrs. Miser set up shop. Please check their website for their latest installations. and workshops.

RVA Tattoos

With over 50 shops to choose from and a myriad of incredibly talented artists, RVA does not lack on this unique gift. Who doesn’t want their deposit paid for or a gift certificate to their favorite ink well. Additionally, a lot of these places sell artwork and merch from their artists as well . Give a gift that will literally be permanently remembered.

Cooking Classes

I know a lot of people who love to cook and want to sharpen their skills by expanding their home menus. Some want to fine tune or learn to use diverse ingredients while others just want to learn to cook healthier. Giving the gift of cooking not only is a great gift, but it’s only going to benefit you at the next dinner party.

Jewelry

RVA has some fine jewelry makers and who doesn’t want cool bling to show off. You can support our local jewelers and also give someone a unique statement piece. Shop these and get all your bijoulicious wares.

It’s Leatha

We have some very talented leathersmiths here in RVA, and what better long lasting items to present to your loved ones. I particularly like the knife roll that Van Herten crafts and the cool patterns and name of Blackbyrd, badass. Awl Snap has everything from clutches to backpacks for all their toting needs.

Musical Performances/Dance/Theater

If your people are anything like me and enjoy going to a show, then I suggest tickets to support the local performing arts and our very few venues. Check out who is coming to The National, The Camel, The Broadberry, or Richmond Music Hall. Both Richmond Ballet and Latin Ballet of Virginia have gift certificate purchasing available. In addition, The Richmond Symphony has recorded music and gift certificates for purchase to any performance. Give them the gift of improv with Coalition Theater or give them the theater experience with a gift certificate from Virginia Rep. In addition to their annual performances, you can also get them dancing with a class from Dogtown Dance Theater.

Foods

RVA has some great local flavors to enhance any stocking or gift box. Check these out!

I Think You’re Freaky and I Like You a Lot

The holidays are not just for the traditional socks and underwear crowd. If you are looking for something a little different Rest in Pieces is your spot. Cool taxidermy, tarot cards and all things strange, RIP has what you’re looking for.

Words

For those bookworms, go by Chop Suey or Fountain Bookstore and get some local authors’ works and if they are in love with the written word, present the present of a writing class, Life in 10 Minutes is a fantastic way for them to explore their inner scribe.

Social Clubs

Give them the gift of hanging out. RVA has some great social clubs to help them impress clients, interact, and enjoy a communal lifestyle.

Hands On

Get them a class or gift certificate to the Visual Arts Center, membership to Build, RVA or Workbench RVA. The gift of learning is strong Santahopper.

Time for Growth and Giving

Support our local restauranteur, Terrence O’Neill (Penny Lane Pub) as he begins his facial growth for charity!

Every year around this time, I encourage the gift of giving. This year my candidate is Terence O’Neill and his ‘Stache endeavors for charity with M4K Richmond. I’ve know this favorite person of mine for over 30 years and he owns one of my favorite pubs in RVA, Penny Lane. I adore his family, and his staff has always been excellent to me for many a nightcap, happy hour, and footy match (Go LFC!). I’m asking you all to support him and in turn support a local business as he takes his bald face into a progressive mouth brow — For the children!

Let’s support Terence and his attempt for Ted Lasso lip broom status, and I’m hoping you will join in. Here’s his message:

Terry O’Neil, Owner of Penny Lane Pub

Clean Shaven and Ready for Donations

Last year I joined some neighborhood gentlemen in a wonderful charity endeavor. I have since realized how big this actually is. M4K Richmond, Mustaches For Kids, is a huge nationwide organization. If you were part of my facebook page you know (some of you new additions are about to find out) that last year I grew a mustache for M4K Richmond in the hopes that I can raise money for the many Children's Charities here in Richmond that they represent. Before looking forward to this growing season I would be remiss if I didn't take a moment to look back at what we did last year, and how your donations had a major impact.

Last year the growers of M4K Richmond raised over $500,000 for charities here in Richmond! Think about that, a bunch of guys growing mustaches and drinking beer managed to raise over $500,000 for children in need. That would not be possible if it wasn't for the generous donations from those who support us, so thank you. Because of your donations we were able to present some seriously large checks, both in physical size and monetary value:

Those impressive numbers have given me the strength to shave my face, and pledge to only allow the hairs on my upper lip to be the ones that the world sees. Sure there are more socially acceptable facial hair options like the ever popular full beard, the "I'm only half committed" 5 O'Clock shadow, humble Goatee, or even the somehow non-spiritual Soul Patch. But those don't quite make the same statement as the mustache, so here we go. I will be sending you weekly updates on my progress along with photo or video proof, and encouraging you to donate to my fundraising page.

Donate to Terrence’s Stache Growth or Join the Cause

Hola RVA!

Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage

My mom and me, circa 1978)

My mom and me, circa 1978)

It was not an easy road for my Panamanian mother coming into this country. She had to maneuver around a difficult language (yes, English is way harder to learn than Spanish), bear the insults and the slurs because of her skin tone and accent, and learn a new culture while abandoning some of her own. She also knew no one in this foreign land called America, all with a three year old baby and Cajun-American husband in the deep south in the 1970s.

My mother got her GED, and then went on to get her college degree in business. She is a master seamstress, a hard negotiator, and is the best chef of any experience I’ve had. She will tell you to “go to hell” in her accomplished English if someone tells her to go back where she came from, and she took two kids, came to Virginia and made an entire life for herself here. That includes buying two homes since moving here in 1986. Basically, my mom is fierce.

I’m incredibly proud of my ethnic background and even though I cannot claim my Latin heritage fully due to having Cajun and Asian in the mix, Panama is the land I was born in and it is where my maternal family resides. It is also the side I gravitate towards the most—um, dancing, good food, and passion? Who doesn’t want to claim that?! We all come from beautifully diverse countries, rich in culture, bio-diversity, language, and peoples.

A Latin home is a warm one and I’m so proud that my work home promotes the same. These agents miss many things about their Latin American homes, like authentic food and their families (I know I miss mine). So, not only have they’ve made a successful life here, but they also help others gain homeownership success. Ten percent of Virginia’s population is made up the Hispanic community with 16,805 (Census 2019) living and contributing to RVA. We have a thriving community within the arts, business, government, and a plethora of restaurants! Let’s celebrate #NationalHispanicHeritageMonth with pride and support for LatinX residents!

Joanna Rodriguez, Venezuela

Joanna is a boss agent. With 10 years in real estate and a 30 year resident of RVA, Joanna lives in the Short Pump area with her dog and son. She loves the food scene here and her ability to build relationships with her Spanish and English clients has been a solid asset.

Angel Campverde, Ecuador

Angel has lived in the US for 12 years and is a sweetheart of an agent. He’s been practicing for the past year. This nature lover enjoys spending time in Shenandoah National Park and Chesapeake Bay.

Daniela Queen, Bolivia

Daniela is a Queen when it comes to her real estate abilities. Her 16 year residency in the US brought her to RVA where she enjoys the setting and events of Forest Hill Park. Daniela has been an agent for almost three years now and she kills it.

Mi Familia

These are my RVA Hispanic brothers and sisters. I’m happy that I know all these wonderful people from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela, a myriad of artists, educators, musicians and chefs. (Click photos to learn more about these asombroso individuals).

Celebrating National Culinary Arts Month

Celebrating the culinary genius of RVA Chefs!

Photos from Instagram (click on photos to follow)

Once upon a time I watched a boy walk into Ukrops to get a job where he ended up in the bakery. I watched that very same boy eventually move to New York to become an Executive Pastry Chef opening up Jean-Georges Vongerichten restaurants across the world to working with Chef Daniel Boulud amongst other culinary notables. I also once sat on the phone with Ducati loving, celebrity pastry chef, Johnny Iuzzini while he was waiting to get Lasik eye surgery. Oh how I miss you NY. Anyway, I’ve known many a chef in my lifetime and despite the “rockstar” status of it all, I find the culinary arts to be one of the most intimate and passionate expressions out there.

I think my first real culinary discovery was Jimmy Sneed’s The Frog and the Redneck. His duck was magnifique! From there, my tastebuds kept maturing and I became a bit more adventurous with my palate. We were also blessed by a growing RVA restaurant scene. I remember on my 24th birthday, my dear friend Justin Cropper (Don’t Look Back South and Union Market) made me a red snapper dish at Lemaire that I still crave to this day and I remember my first meals at Mamma Zu, Helen’s, Comfort and Magpie. Memorable cuisine lasts forever, and chefs like the Longoven trio—Patrick and Megan Phelan and Andrew Manning, along with the likes of Brittanny Anderson (Brenner Pass), Caleb Shriver (RIP Dutch & Co), Lee Gregory (Alewife) and David Shannon (L'Opossum) have elevated our little city town to put RVA on the food heaven map.

Chefs have always fascinated me. It’s a spectator sport—watching them sit to come up with specials, calm and collected to then yelling across a kitchen while timing every meal to perfection, it’s pretty intense. There is also something about the way a chef’s mind works—how they create and craft. How they decide what is too little and what will never be enough, or how they masterfully cultivate a menu that will touch upon all the senses. It doesn’t have to be pretentious food either, I’ve had some of the best meals prepared in food trucks and as simple as chicken and rice (gotta love Portland’s food scene). I, however, can barely creatively make a sandwich, let alone an entire menu. The intimacy of food is something cherished. When you eat something that is equivalent to what love feels like, it’s magical. Covid took a big bite out of some of our establishments, but these resilient and talented chefs will find their way back into our hearts and mouths.

If you haven’t experienced these culinary artists and their dining rooms, I urge you to do so — like now. Thank you for making RVA the delicious, savory and beautifully presented food oasis it is. Can we eat now?

I think we can all agree, we are ready to be served up by RVA’s finest. I want to thank the talented chefs below, I know how busy they have been and I appreciate their time. Very excited to hear Heritage has reopened!

CHEF LAINE MYERS of ORO

1. One word to describe my food is “balanced.” I’m always striving for the perfect balance. With every flavor, every ingredient, every dish as a whole.
2. It’s too hard to name one favorite RVA chef, so I’ll recognize a few here. Carson Bledsoe, Chef de Cuisine at Metzger is doing great work with her team. She cooks seasonally and creatively, and I always look forward to eating her food. Another great duo (whom I waited too long to have my first dining experience), is David and Sariann from The Broken Tulip. Such a memorable meal, with a great cozy atmosphere. I found myself saying “that was a nice touch” all throughout the night from the spiced vegetable chips that were on the table as we arrived to the honey comb presentation with the cheese course toward the end of the meal. I will think of that night fondly for a long time. Lastly, I want to give acknowledgement to my favorite pastry chef in town, Olivia Wilson, who by the way is just as strong on the savory end of things. She has a strong background in terms of her training, and ran a successful pastry program at both Metzger and Brenner Pass + Chairlift. I often think of her as the pinnacle of skill in the kitchen. Very very excited to see what she does next!
3. My favorite dish to make would be something that uses minimal ingredients and allows the main component’s flavor to shine. I’d probably have to say sungold tomato spaghettini, prepared a la minute in the pan by sweating sliced garlic and sun golds together until the garlic is translucent and the sungolds have split and allowed their juices to form a sauce. Finish with some buttery olive oil and an aged parmesan reggiano, and you’ve got one of the best meals of Summer. This will actually be one of my menu items for this weekend’s Oro pop up menu!
4. My favorite herb/spice is always evolving, but right now I can definitively say whole green coriander, or Mexican oregano.
5. The one thing I make consistently at home that brings me joy is a tomato sandwich. Honestly really anything that’s heavy on the tomatoes while they’re in season whether that’s a salad with a punchy vinaigrette, or baked into something like a frittata. Another consistent year round favorite is a charcuterie board. I love all of the condiments that we tend to go overboard on in my house. Pickles, honey, ferments, mustard, fruit, baguette, olives. They’re a conglomerate of my favorite things.

Who’s Your Daddy

Famous TV dads explore RVA…

Photo by: Jo Ann L. Breaux

Photo by: Jo Ann L. Breaux

I miss my dad. This past year was rough not doing our usual visit with each other. He resides in a very small town in Louisiana, and it isn’t always the easiest jaunt. I’m thankful for one thing during Covid, it brought me closer to my distanced family. I began a routine of calling them whilst I walked, which made me a) walk longer and b) really concentrate on having a conversation with them. I think once normalcy resumes in some capacity, we will be seeing more and more family gatherings especially with our families who live afar.

One of the things I love about our city is diversity in activity. No matter what you’re into, whether you’re a sporty dad or an artsy one, there’s something for every Father here. I decided to check out what our TV dads would do in RVA for their special day! (Click to enlarge)

Mother MAY I?

Being a Realtor mom has it’s challenges, but the rewards are far greater than any career I’ve had…

unsplash-image-nMffL1zjbw4.jpg

I remember coming home from school and putting the key in the door to let myself in. Mom hadn’t been back from work yet, but once she did, she was confronting a pile of stacked up clothes to be altered for the local department store. All day long she was at the manufactory sewing hems on suit pants. She worked long, painful hours and there wasn’t a lot of times for stories or playtime with her. Her impeccable work ethic had a lot to do with her Panamanian-Chinese upbringing and I grew up with her advising that I save ever penny, “You never know what’s going to happen, so be prepared.” Those words have echoed in my head for a lifetime.

Since I'm a broker and flip houses my world can feel upside down some days. I've learned to hire people and trust they will do as good as a job as I would. Take me time without guilt and I'm still learning to say no when needed. Honestly, I love challenges and instant gratification in everything I do. So real estate hits all the Hotspots. Plus, who doesn’t like the financial freedom from the investment side. I'm teaching my kids generational wealth and breaking generational curses. - Joan Small, RVA Group Realty

I never had children unfortunately, I do however have a step-daughter who doesn’t understand the stretch of a dollar or what it is to struggle to eat every day. What I do have the luxury of is giving her my time. I’m able to pick her up when I need to, to hang out and play with her when she wants and take her along to open houses. She is seriously the best PR rep I could ask for. Being in Real Estate allows a lot of women to have full careers, make ends meet, and have time to be there for their kids. I couldn’t imagine giving my kids the fair treatment and time they deserved while working in advertising or being a paralegal. I cannot tell you how many times I had to stay after hours to meet some ridiculous deadline, and if I decided otherwise I may have not have had the career I strived for. The American Dream—work hard, move up the ladder. Let’s be frank here, that tends to be a bunch of horse poop.

“At first it was super challenging to be a mother and a realtor. After being a full time mother and yoga teacher, adjustments had to be made for the whole family. Like many working moms I felt some guilt about juggling my time and it was hard for me to prioritize. Over time we have all adjusted and I have learned to switch gears and be present with my family when I’m with my family and be present with my clients when I’m with my clients. Yoga helps a lot! It has definitely provided our family with some extra opportunities that we are grateful for and I really do enjoy finding people homes in a city that I love. “ - Kelly Trask, One South Realty

I have loved my new career in real estate because it gives me personal freedom. It is a job where I’m accountable and I am my own boss, but most of all, it is a job I am able to make my own time. There are some downsides to that as well as I’m sure every realtor mom can relate to. I’m only a part-time mom and I’m sure my experience is different than my full-time mama duty colleagues. Weekends can be difficult with showings and open houses. Also, you have to consider your clients’ needs. If they want to see a house in two hours, you have to be able to accommodate those schedules, and sometimes plans are broken at home. I think we all struggle with saying no sometimes in addition to putting boundaries in place. There is the reward though, to be able to take a vacation for a week and literally be present or to be able to take a day and focus your attention on your children rather than being tied to a desk is a great feeling that not a lot of people have the privilege of experiencing.

It gave me opportunity to accommodate my schedule and arrange it around my husbands so that always one of us would stay home with the kids while they took online classes. As time went by and market got crazier it got a little bit more complicate it because even though I can still accommodate my schedule it seems like I’m never home, no weekend, anytime any day, I can’t really make plans ahead of time because I have to be there for my clients. - Daniela Queen, RVA Group Realty

Kids are hard. They just are. We as agents work from our home offices a lot of the time and sometimes it’s hard if you have little ones scurrying about while you are trying to write a contract. I have some realtor friends who are incredibly strict with setting boundaries for their businesses because they don’t want any interference into their home life. If you are making a lot of sales it’s easy to have that priority, but i you are an agent starting out or not as busy, it can be very difficult telling your client you can’t meet them at 6pm because you are having dinner with your family, in your head, you don’t want to lose them.

The challenges of mommydom and being an agent are, to me, far less than other careers. You do have the ability to maneuver schedules and be effective/productive remotely. The key is to organize and prioritize, find a schedule that works for you so you can spend time being a mom and a great agent. We’re women, we can usually get our lipstick on while on a conference call, flipping pancakes and packing little Johnny’s lunch, all while wearing heels. And this is why we make fantastic agents. Kids also make great helpers in our business, they love to pass out flyers, drop off popbys, and they come up with the best suggestions for rooms.

So, to all my Mama Bear Agents, you’re doing a great job and remember that the rewards of this career will allow that Disney vacay or that European trip you’ve always wanted to take them on. Now you can go back to your superheroine’ing.

Asian Persuasion

Asian/Pacific Islander Heritage Month is on it’s way and I for one am celebrating their contributions to RVA…

It’s Asian American and Pacific Islanders month and what better way to celebrate than to honor those living right here in RVA. We must start by not dismissing our plentiful Asian food culture. We are privileged to have the incredible Asian cuisine flooding our city, from the tasty Phở of Phở Tay Do to the lumpiang of Auntie Ning’s to Akida’s tasty sushi to India K’Raja’s long running lunch buffet. Whether it’s Vietnamese or Filipino, Sushi or Gyoza our Asian food options are on point, but aren’t we so much more than that? I mean we did produce Constance Wu (Fresh Off the Boat, Crazy Rich Asians) (big up to my alma mater!), but we have other notable Asians in our community who are contributing other talents, awareness, politics, advocacy, and businesses to RVA.

May Nivar

There are many significant people who donate to RVA’s success and accomplishments, enlightening those on the inclusivity and cultural awareness of our fine home. Individuals like May Nivar who is chair of the Virginia Asian Advisory Board. She is also the founding chair of the Asian & Latino Solidarity Alliance of Central Virginia and serves as a Richmond chapter member of the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities and all their members, including Justin Lo (left). Justin is Associate General Counsel, Financial Services for the Virginia State Corporation Commission and a restaurant critic for the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Justin has helped voice inclusion and diverse cultural references in food criticism. In addition he has shred his experiences with discrimination in the current climate.

I can go on and list all of the resident Asian and Pacific Islanders who contribute to RVA (there’s a ton), but I’d rather focus on who I know and have known throughout the years who have enriched Richmond life for me and others through friendship, connection and inspiration. I’m proud to call them “my people”.

Anthony Meñez, my lifelong comrade who is a talented graphic/web designer, illustrator, cartoonist, and sketcher and hosts RVA’s annual Zombie Walk contributing funds to the American Cancer Society. Anthony is incredibly dedicated to his crafts and is a member of the 7 Hills Scooter Club here in Richmond. He also sings a mean Depeche Mode.

Sunny Zhao, a true storyteller and visionary. He is an ward-winning film director and musician. His film company Dreams Factory has done several advertising and branding campaigns world wide. His feature debut film, Gift (2018), received accolades and was 2018 and 2019 Official Selection for Richmond’s International Film Festival. He and I share a love of cars and beauty of imagery.

Sae and Stephanie Ahn, my trustworthy dry cleaners. Since 2006, this brother/sister duo has been in the business of cleaning, mending, and storing their customer’s clothing. What makes them so great? They have a hydrocarbon solvent-based dry-cleaning machine which makes them an Organic dry cleaning business, making it better for the environment and their employees. Mmmm so fresh and so clean!

On the 23rd of this month, we will celebrate National Picnic Day! The pandemic has got more and more of us eating al fresco and we are fortunate to have so many beautiful places to lay out our spreads. With the weather reaching optimal temperatures, finding choice spots are in demand as well as finding restaurants specializing in perfect outdoor eats. Whether romantic, luxe, or family fun, RVA knows how to provide a basket worthy backdrop. I’ve collected a few to help you out on your adventure!

Choice Picnic Spots

We have many parks littered about RVA, but I find these to be the most pleasant for your picnicking fun.

  • Maymont: Never disappoints with its vast areas for laying about amongst the trees and animals.

  • Forest Hill Park: It’s rolling hills and the James make a perfectly serene site.

  • The Church Hill Lookout: intimate and view worthy, you may want to find the perfect time to bring your honey

  • Libby Hill Park: City and River views worth taking in blanket-side

  • Three Lakes Park: Walk around the lakes, visit the Nature center and grub out with the kids

  • Crump Park and Meadow Farm: Nice spots at the pond or enjoy the historical working farm grounds

  • Hollywood Cemetery: Eating with the dead isn’t so morbid, enjoy gorgeous views of the James at peace

  • University of Richmond: The campus is perfect for picnic by the pond and even a nice stroll afterwards
