Welcome to Northside!

No longer is Brookland Park Boulevard carrying its former street cars, but this area along with the rest of Northside is a hot commodity these days.

Northside is a famously historic area of Richmond made up of architecturally diverse subdivisions, tree lined and walkable streets. You will see architectural styles including Queen Annes, Arts and Crafts, Bungalows, Four Squares and Colonial Revivals. The area lies in the City of Richmond and Henrico County and is notably associated with Major Lewis Ginter, the New York native and Richmond transplant, who became one of its wealthiest citizens. The esteemed, yet humble businessman, military officer, real estate developer, and philanthropist was a huge contributor and supporter of Richmond.

Northside consists of subdivisions which vary and transition from one to the other, but there is no mistaking the character and beauty of the area. Living in Northside inhabits the very core of knowing thy neighbor. It is friendly, and has a tight-knitted community. You will see young couples moving into the area, along with 35+ year homeowners, as well as long established families. You’ll be greeted by hellos on your walks, see tons of dog owners, and people love their yards here. Known for its gardens, parks and historical value, Northside creates an area of Richmond unlike any other and continues to create diverse and supportive culture. You’ll find traditional barber shops, new young business owners, dining institutions, and growing small businesses here.

Northside is diverse. It still maintains character without selling out. I love it here with all its parks and walkable areas and the best thing are the neighbors, they really do look out for each other. - E.A.B., Resident (4.5 years)

The Scene

Bellevue Avenue

The neighborhoods of Northside are highly walkable with sidewalks and treelined avenues. Taking a walk in Bellevue down MacArthur Avenue will be filled with plenty of dining and shopping options. You can pull up a stool at Dot’s Back Inn and take in photos of past times, have a chat with a long time regular, or get dished out sass from its waitstaff while eating one of the best brunches in town. Stop by Once Upon a Vine and grab some craft brew or a bottle of vino, owner Bob will even suggest a cigar for your travels. Alcohol not your thing? No worries, grab a coffee and snack over at Stir Crazy Cafe and later grab a yoga class or enjoy a massage at True North Yoga Wellness. Get your car worked on at Decatur’s while learning guitar at One Three Guitar. Have that ex’s jewelry reimagined at Walker and Son or grab some cupcakes at Morsel’s. Grab some enchiladas and a tequila at Mi Jalisco, enjoy delicious Greek cuisine at Demi’s, or indulge in a fancy cocktail and savory specials at The Mill. You’ll never go hungry on MacArthur Avenue.

Bellevue Avenue

Bellevue has one of my favorite Italian restaurants in Richmond, Enoteca Sogno. When I am not feasting at Mamma Zu, this cute Italian bistro fills my needs in pasta and in wine. Bellevue is the place you go to fill your prescription at CVS, satiate your need for organics and healthy goods at Little Green Grocery, grab a delicious homemade biscuit from Early Bird, watch the game, eat wings, and chat it up with regulars at Northside Grille and get a beautiful bouquet and visit the store kitty at Nicola Flora. A tiny block of Bellevue that boasts many gems.

Brookland Park Boulevard

This once bustling street is making a comeback and I love it! I love walking down it and seeing the barbers clipping away at all hours of the day and night. I check in at Alma’s RVA all the time to see what new local artisans she’s carrying or when her next art show is. It’s a great place to get gifts or artful home decor items or a smile. You can get a delicious meal on the main drag from many fine establishments that will satiate your every tastebud. From the community loving Nomads to the event driven Fuzzy Cactus to a quick pick up at Brookland Park Market, there’s something for everyone and it’s always delicious. I love going into Scrap RVA and finding fun stuff to do artful things. It’s a unique store filled with salvaged art supplies, trimmings, fabrics, etc. You’ll never be birthdaycakeless or at a loss for baked goods at Michaela's home of the 6 layer Thalheimer cake. Don’t get me started on the newly planted in Ruby Scoops or taking care of myself with delicious juices from Ms. Bee’s Juice Bar and Ninja Kombucha. As you can tell, it’s a total walkable area with plenty to do and see. It’s also noted that the old Brookland Park Theater is in renovation and I’m excited to see what they do with this future venue. I foresee this to be a highly trafficked walkway once more!
